Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Kill Bill, Asterix & Obelix, The Three Musketeers and probably many more inspirations: An absolutely hilarious martial arts parody festival which left me speechless multiple times with its over-the-top, anime-channeling choreographies, a roaring landlady you don’t want to play with, cartoonish gags and wide-ranging special moves. But amidst all the action, Stephen Chow somehow manages to weave in an incredibly moving love arc with a lollipop and a hard-hitting flashback about the mafioso-aspiring protagonist at the heart of the story – an upsettingly beautiful feat and a perfect mix of fighting, slapstick, dark comedy and romance.
